I think Sanjiv offered some good advice.
When we're sad, we tend not to do much and so we wind up spending way too much time thinking about the stuff that makes us sad, and that just makes the sadness get bigger. Also, when we're sad, we don't feel like doing the things that will eventually make us happy... like exercising, making new friends, going places. It seems like an effort when we're low, but really it is key... you've got to make an effort until you find more things that make you happy and find more happiness in yourself. You're not likely to find it by dwelling on unhappiness. Instead, you've got to find people, things to do, new experiences, and have new thoughts.
My favorite quick-fix is music. Music has amazing powers to change our moods, so find happy music and put it on when you're feeling low, and get moving! I like to dance to music at home... give it a try.
